Setting Up OpenClaw on a Mac Mini: The Ideal Home AI Server

Why the Mac Mini is the perfect device for running OpenClaw 24/7, and how to get the most out of it.

If you're setting up OpenClaw as a dedicated AI assistant for your business, you need a Mac that's always on, always connected, and doesn't get in the way. That's exactly what the Mac Mini was designed for.

Why the Mac Mini Is Perfect for OpenClaw

It's Small and Silent

The Mac Mini is barely larger than a paperback book. It sits quietly on a shelf, desk, or tucked behind a monitor. No fans spinning up, no noise, no visual clutter. Most people forget it's there, which is exactly what you want from a 24/7 AI server.

It's Energy Efficient

Apple Silicon chips are incredibly power-efficient. A Mac Mini running OpenClaw 24/7 uses about 5–15 watts when idle (waiting for your messages) and 30–40 watts under load (processing AI requests). That's roughly $3–5 per month on a typical Australian electricity plan.

Compare that to a traditional server which might use 100–500 watts, and you can see why the Mac Mini makes sense.

It Has the Right Amount of Power

OpenClaw isn't doing the AI processing itself. It sends your messages to cloud AI providers and receives the responses. The Mac Mini's job is to run the gateway software, manage connections to your messaging apps, and keep everything ticking over.

The M4 chip in the current Mac Mini has more than enough power for this, with plenty of headroom for running multiple agents, handling concurrent conversations, and processing tasks in the background.

It's Reliable

Apple Silicon Macs have no moving parts (no spinning hard drives, no fan in the base model). They run cool, quiet, and stable. Hardware failures are extremely rare. macOS updates automatically, and the system is designed to recover gracefully from power outages.

Which Mac Mini Should You Buy?

For Most Businesses: Mac Mini M4 (16GB RAM)

This is the sweet spot. Handles everything OpenClaw needs with room to spare:

  • Runs OpenClaw, gateway services, and multiple agents simultaneously
  • Enough RAM for conversation history and active sessions
  • Starts from $899 AUD

For Power Users: Mac Mini M4 Pro (24GB RAM)

If you plan to run many agents, process large documents, or use OpenClaw heavily across multiple platforms:

  • More RAM means more concurrent operations
  • Faster processing for complex tasks
  • Future-proof for expanded usage
  • Starts from $1,999 AUD

Skip Unless You Need It: Mac Mini M4 Pro (48GB+ RAM)

Only necessary if you plan to run local AI models (instead of cloud APIs) or have very specific power requirements. For standard OpenClaw usage, this is overkill.

Setting Up Your Mac Mini as an AI Server

During our setup service, we configure your Mac Mini specifically for running OpenClaw 24/7. Here's what that involves:

System Configuration

  • Auto-login: Mac starts up and logs in automatically after a power outage
  • Sleep disabled: Mac stays awake 24/7 so your assistant is always available
  • Auto-restart on freeze: macOS restarts automatically if it becomes unresponsive
  • FileVault encryption: your data is encrypted at rest
  • Automatic updates: security patches install automatically

OpenClaw Configuration

  • Launch at startup: OpenClaw starts automatically when the Mac boots
  • Crash recovery: if OpenClaw crashes, it restarts automatically
  • Automated backups: nightly backups of your configuration and conversation history
  • Log rotation: prevents log files from filling up your storage

Network Configuration

  • Static IP or DHCP reservation: your Mac keeps the same network address
  • Firewall rules: only necessary connections allowed
  • Wake-on-LAN: ability to wake the Mac remotely if needed

Where to Put Your Mac Mini

The Mac Mini needs three things:

  1. Power outlet: it uses so little power you can plug it in anywhere
  2. Ethernet or Wi-Fi: ethernet is ideal for reliability, but Wi-Fi works fine
  3. Ventilation: don't put it inside a completely sealed cabinet. Open shelving or behind a monitor works well

You don't need a monitor, keyboard, or mouse connected after the initial setup. The Mac Mini runs "headless," meaning it just sits there working. You interact with your AI assistant through Telegram, WhatsApp, or whichever messaging app you chose.

Can I Use My Existing Mac Instead?

Absolutely. If you have an Apple Silicon Mac (M1 or newer), we can set up OpenClaw on it. The tradeoffs:

  • MacBook: Works great but needs to stay open/powered and connected to the internet. If you close it or take it somewhere without Wi-Fi, your assistant goes offline.
  • iMac: Perfect as a desk setup. Same reliability as a Mac Mini but you also get a display.
  • Mac Studio / Mac Pro: Absolutely works, but more power (and cost) than you need for OpenClaw alone.

The dedicated Mac Mini approach is popular because it's affordable, reliable, and lets you keep using your main computer however you want without worrying about keeping OpenClaw running.
